The Power of Sound: How KOKOON Turns Music into an Immersive Wellness Experience
The power of sound
Picture our ancestors listening to birdsong, experimenting with calls, melodies and rhythms drawn from the natural world. The origins of music and language are still debated, but their connection speaks to something deeply human: sound has helped us communicate, connect and express emotion for millennia.
Researchers, including MIT linguist Shigeru Miyagawa and colleagues, have explored parallels between birdsong and human language. Charles Darwin also considered the possibility that musical expression preceded some forms of speech. These are compelling theories, rather than a settled account of how language began. What is clear is that rhythm and melody remain powerful ways to communicate without words
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does. That ancient relationship helps explain why music still feels so immediate today
Music engages networks across the brain
Listening to music involves much more than hearing. Depending on the music and the listener, it can engage networks involved in movement, attention, memory, emotion and reward. A familiar song can bring back a vivid memory; a rhythm can make us want to move. This breadth is part of what makes sound such a versatile element in a wellness experience.
Its influence is not only emotional. Music can also affect how we feel in our bodies.
It can support relaxation and nervous system regulation. Research into music interventions has reported changes in measures such as heart rate variability, a measure often used to explore how the autonomic nervous system responds to stress and recovery. Results depend on the person, the setting and the type of intervention, so no soundtrack can promise the same physiological effect for everyone. Still, music offers a practical, accessible way to create space for calm, focus or energy. This is central to the experiences Kloodos develops
Music can evoke joy, nostalgia or a sense of release. Researchers have observed activity in brain regions associated with emotion and reward when people listen to music they find meaningful. Its non-verbal nature can also make it a valuable part of supported therapeutic work. Those possibilities deserve care: listening to a soundtrack is not a substitute for trauma treatment or clinical mental health care.
The result?
A thoughtfully designed sound experience can invite calm, encourage reflection and make a wellness session feel more personal and immersive. This is why sound deserves a central place in wellness design.
We already use wearables and other tools to pay attention to stress, sleep and recovery. Sound offers another way to shape the experience around us. At Kloodos, we consider not only what someone hears, but when and how they hear it. Our compositions can combine music, rhythm and spatial audio to complement the different stages of an experience.
Kokoon was born
That thinking led us to KOKOON. The KOKOON pod is our immersive environment for guided sound and sensory experiences; KOKOON Mini brings that approach to a smaller format. The sound experiences we develop are delivered directly through KOKOON and KOKOON Mini, so the audio is an integral part of the experience rather than a background playlist. We design the content and its delivery together, with each composition chosen to support the intended journey—from settling in, to deeper relaxation, to a gentle return.
We work with specialists across sound, science and production to explore how composition and delivery affect the listener's experience. Techniques such as binaural beats, isochronic rhythms and 3D spatial audio can be used where appropriate, alongside careful attention to clarity, pacing and fidelity. The value lies in how the elements work together for the person listening, not in promising a particular brain state or medical outcome. Kloodos sound experiences are used within our work in elite sport, where recovery, focus and the ability to switch off all matter.
So the next time you put on your headphones, notice how a piece of music changes the moment.
Within KOKOON and KOKOON Mini, we take that idea further: sound, delivered directly into the experience, becomes part of a carefully considered environment for rest, reflection and renewal.
TO GUARANTEE EFFECT
When Kloodos develops an experience for physical, mental or emotional wellbeing, we study how its elements work together. We consider the sequence, the sound, the space and the way each person encounters them. We test and refine the experience so it feels coherent from beginning to end.
That attention extends to every technology we design, build, supply or integrate. With KOKOON and KOKOON Mini, the relationship is especially clear: the sound we create goes directly into the product experience. Composition, playback and the surrounding environment are considered together to make every detail count.
The Kokoon is a collaboration with experts across several disciplines:
- Published scientists
- Grammy Award-winning producers
- Composers with research into the effects of sound
- Physiologists
- Psychiatrists

Each brings a different perspective to the design and refinement of the experience.
Kloodos Sonic
After developing our core portfolio of wellness technologies, we looked more closely at how light, sound, acoustics and visual design could enrich them. That work led to our Sonic range: sensory layers designed to complement a therapy or setting. A Kloodos soundtrack is composed with the stages of the experience in mind, so it can accompany the journey rather than simply play alongside it. In KOKOON and KOKOON Mini, that audio is delivered directly as a defining part of the experience.
We first explored these layered experiences in elite professional sport, where the demands on both body and mind are considerable. The lessons from those settings continue to inform how we design for other environments.
Today, Kloodos works with premium hospitality spaces to make wellness feel present throughout a property. Sound, light and atmosphere can change with the time of day and the purpose of a room, giving a beautiful space another dimension. KOKOON and KOKOON Mini can offer guests a more focused moment within that wider journey, with Kloodos-developed sound at its heart.
Our work also reaches private health and corporate settings. From workshops and pop-ups to considered changes in the workplace, we create experiences that invite people to pause, reconnect and work well together. Where appropriate, our partner psychologists can support group sessions, too.
